James Monroe Mabe of Asheboro died on July 27th, 2020 as a result of an automobile accident.
He was 2 months shy of his 89th birthday. Jim was born Oct. 12, 1931 to Sally Needham Ferree and Jesse James Mabe who preceded him in death. He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Norma Jean Cashatt Mabe as well as three children, Linda Mabe Galloway and husband Ken , Jimmy Mabe and wife Tammy and John Mabe all of Asheboro. He was the proud grandfather of 6 grandchildren Amber Mabe, James Mabe, Daniel Peoples, Jordan Peoples,Tyler Galloway and Kendal Galloway and 8 great grandchildren Alex, Ryan, Jake, Liam, Lealand, Gabe, Lyndon, & Jensen.
He was a retired Lt. Commander of the US navy after 22 years of service. He was a Helicopter pilot and the recovery pilot for Walter Schirra during the Mercury Mission in 1962. He also flew blimps…and was known to fly a blimp over Asheboro a time or two. He was a Bronze Star recipient , was very patriotic and proud to have served his country.
Jim taught school at South Asheboro Middle School for 10 years and was known for his sense of humor.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mid-State Cremation is serving the Mabe Family.
