Robert Ernest Summerlin

October 16, 1955 ~ September 13, 2021 (age 65)

Obituary

Robert Ernest Summerlin passed away peacefully at the Hospice House of Asheboro, on Monday September 13, 2021. He was born October 16, 1955 in Caldwell County, North Carolina to the late Mildren O. Summerlin (8/22/1934-03/1/2014) and Robert L. Summerlin. (07/28/1927-02/03/1994).

Robert entered the United States Marine Corps in 1973. He was honorably discharged. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

Robert had many titles in life, son, daddy, brother, uncle, friend, carpenter, roofer, frame builder, fisherman, outdoorsman, and most important he was an animal lover. There was never an animal he could not catch and tame. He leaves behind his three pride and joys, JoJo, Cody and Dixie.

Robert enjoyed the great outdoors. At an early age you could find him and his brother outside.  Robert  greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was very good with hands. He had an unimaginable ability to build anything with his bare hands once he envisioned it. He took pride in everything he did. If you wanted to find Robert, look for the nearest body of water. In his younger days you could always find his nephew in tow, Jason Rich. Whenever you saw Robert, Jason was soon to follow.

In his earlier years, he could be found at his Mother and Father house on any given Sunday. The staple of the family. They would gather every sunday afternoon, and eat and play games outside with sisters and brothers and many nieces and nephews. Memories of making homemade ice cream and playing kick ball will always be held close. Christmas Eve was also a very special day, we would all gather in the living room of the Grandparents house,  while Sandy Kay would read from the bible. Then we would open all the presents. These are moments that will last a lifetime.

Robert's brother Joel Bruce stayed by his side throughout his battle with Cancer. He made sure his Big Brother did not want or need anything. His final days in The Hospice House of Asheboro were spent surrounded by his loved ones. Robert was able to enjoy his days beside a huge window looking outside. Many days, two beautiful Cardinals would stop by for a visit on his window sill after enjoying the birdfeeder. That put a big beautiful smile on his face.

One thing Robert Ernest Summerlin was not, was a quitter. He beat the odds. They said less than 6 months. He fought for 11 months and cancer won the battle, sadly. BUT he did not go easy, he fought like hell.

“And you, my father, there on the sad height,

Cruse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

-Dylan Thomas”
