Durham- Thomas Lee Golden, 83, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City. Born February 20, 1940 in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John Henry Golden and Alice Westerberg Golden.
Thomas received his high school education from Kane Area High School in Pennsylvania. He was a proud veteran of the Navy having enlisted after high school and served 3 years before his honorable discharge. He worked with IBM for over 20 years as a line supervisor in the manufacturing division.
After retirement, Thomas worked for the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC for over 15 years as a train driver for the Ellerbe Creek railway where he became a local celebrity to many children. Former train passengers, adults and kids alike, often recognized him during his off duty hours and lovingly referred to him as “Engineer Tom”. he also worked for the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and DPAC as a ticket taker/usher.
Thomas enjoyed beach vacations with his family. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Linda Brown Golden; son, Ricky Underwood; and daughter Crystal Carlson and her husband Kevin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Maryanna Golden, Jack Golden, Bill Golden, Marjorie Golden Buhl, and Norman Golden.
